Although in the last 20 years, Endosseous Root Form Implants have become the standard in dentistry, other categories of dental implants still exist and I feel that we should discuss all the options. In 1952, Dr. P. I Brånemark discovered principles that led to the development of endosseous root form dental implants. A great deal of research was performed involving these implants and the data was released to the general population in the early 1980's. Up until that time, the implant market was very small and dominated by blade implants and sub periosteal implants. Trans-Osseous implant (Mandibular Staple) were also in use at that time. Dr. Brånemark's discoveries brought us an implant system that was more predictable and opened up the entire field of tooth replacement much for the betterment of the profession and the patients we serve.

In discussing the categories of dental implants in existence today, we will discuss the Surgical Advantages and Disadvantages, the Prosthetic Advantages and Disadvantages and the Economics of each category.
